Joan Blade Johnson

Zinnia I am a fiber artist.  I have long been interested in all things fiber.  In the last several years, I have become fascinated by the entire creative process involved in composing fiber art pieces using non-traditional methods and materials to achieve my artistic vision, most often inspired by nature and my original nature photography.

The surface design materials that I regularly work with on fabric include: paint, Procion MX reactive dye, foraged natural plant dye, rust, photos transferred to fabric, beads, oil paint sticks, foil, glitter, Angelina fiber, and much more…  A variety of threads, yarns, and occasionally, found objects, are stitched onto the piece and more free motion stitch is added to create rich texture and additional visual interest.

I often work, teach, and exhibit with fellow fiber artist Melanie Johnston. Together, as MJ Fiber Art, we hand dye and sell luscious silk “Gem” Scarves© dyed in luminous gem tones. Each hand dyed scarf is packaged with a card explaining the meaning and sentiment of the corresponding gemstone.   fall color scarves in
